Get Lost

Companions of the Journey,

As we look back on the narrative of our lives, we often pinpoint “watershed moments”, moments that can be pivotal in shaping our lives and perspectives, leading to growth, change, or adaptation. In 1990, Indigo Girls released the song Watershed”(click here to listen on YouTube), which hit big in 1991. The repetitive refrain resonated with me in uncertain times:

Up on the watershed
Standing at the fork in the road
You can stand there and agonize
‘Til your agony’s your heaviest load
You’ll never fly as the crow flies
Get used to a country mile
When you’re learning to face
The path at your pace
Every choice is worth your while

Our paths in life are often complicated, circuitous, and murky. Sometimes, when we are coasting along, we get lost along the way. These moments of getting lost are calls to pay attention and opportunities to slow down and listen rather than panic. Listen for the Spirit’s call. which can direct you in those “fork in the road” moments on the path toward your greater self and God. As the hymn “Blessed Assurance” sings of the path shown us by Jesus:

Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest;
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

This Sunday, we will examine the Gift of Getting Lost in the Dark Wood inspired by Psalm 42 and 1 Samuel 3: 6-9. I look forward to seeing you on 1130 Balclutha, Zoom, or Livestream at 10 am. Invite another companion to the journey.

Peace,
Rev. Michael
