Dear Ones,
Oh, how I’ve missed you!
As you know, last week I was at the Open and Affirming Coalition of the United Church of Christ in Cincinnati, Ohio. What started as the UCC Gay Caucus with the ordination of Rev. William Johnson in 1972 within the Golden Gate Association of the Northern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ later became the ONA. At the 30th General Synod in 1985, there was a renewed commitment to full equality for persons of any sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender discrimination with a goal to reach 100%. Today, approximately 37% of the churches are ONA; there is work still to be done.
Part of the conversation was within the theme “Resistance and Persistence: Hope Reigns”. It was noted as “a powerful call to embrace hope, patience, and perseverance as we continue our journey of faith and advocacy amidst challenging social, political, and economic times.” I got to meet the UCC General Minister and President, Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia A. Thompson, as well as other changemakers from across the country.
One of the big questions was how, through our visual, liturgical, and physical expressions, do we extend not only welcome but demonstrate the celebration of God’s diversity. This of course led to language, race, disability access, etc. Do we even know what our ONA covenant statement is? (See below for full statement.)
Through this week’s Scripture, Mark 9:38-50, we will examine the question of belonging. Who gets to determine what that is and who is included? I look forward to seeing you Sunday at 10 am on 1130 Balclutha, Zoom, or Livestream. Invite a friend.
Love,
Rev. Michael Cronin
P.S. Thank Rev. Michael Hollingshead for being with the community in my absence.
