Greetings Magnificent Works of God,
As we approach Earth Day 2026, I hear a collective groan. There is a tragic irony in this 56th year of commemoration of a movement founded in the United States. Following the Project 2025 policy blueprint spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation, the administration is actively dismantling federal climate initiatives, reversing environmental regulations, and prioritizing fossil fuel production. It aims to dissolve EPA environmental justice programs, dismantle the Inflation Reduction Act’s clean energy investments, and eliminate the National Climate Assessment. The document aims to embed Christian nationalist principles into the federal government.
In our collective groan, Jesus weeps with us saying, “Why do they take my name in vain?” Those who mock us by calling us tree huggers overlook the fact that this is a “Hosanna” moment: “Save us.” Have we learned nothing?
I believe we have learned a lot. There is actually good news on the airwaves and in print about the voices speaking out, collectives forming, and growing action to press forward with sustainable living through eco-stewardship.
On this Earth Day Sunday 2026, we will be examining Mark 4:35-41 (Jesus Calms the Sea) and Romans 8:18-25 (Creation Groans) through the lens of creation justice. I look forward to seeing you on 1130 Balclutha, Zoom, or Livestream at 10 am. Tell a friend.
Flourish!
Rev. Michael
