The movie Harold and Maude never fails to provide me with a poignant quote. Maude delivers this line while explaining her rebellious nature, her past, her philosophy on life, and her deep-seated belief in absolute freedom: “You know, at one time, I used to break into pet shops to liberate the canaries. But I decided that was an idea way before its time. Zoos are full, prisons are overflowing…. Oh my, how the world still *dearly* loves a *cage.*”
Literally and figuratively.
As we come to the close of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, which some states have renamed “Nuclear Family Month,” I am reminded of all the hard-won freedoms peoples throughout history have gained and must work to retain. Last week, Alexis beautifully shared her experience of Juneteenth and her wish for all people to be free. And, “…oh my, how the world still *dearly* loves a *cage.*”
This week we celebrate ONA (Open and Affirming) Sunday. The theme is “We Shall Not Be Moved! Rooted in Love, Justice, and Affirmation.” In the era of Project 2025 and White Christian Nationalism, the messaging and action are needed as much now as they ever were. I want to thank you, Island United, for hosting the San Mateo Pride trainings “Preparing for Pride: From Allyship to Action.” It is bold. As a corrective to the harm done by the Church, I think it is important that – through our action of hospitality – we have said, “No more. You are loved.” Love frees.
I look forward to seeing you at 10 am on Sunday on 1130 Balclutha, Zoom, or Livestream as I reflect upon Jeremiah 17:5–8 and Matthew 10:40-42.
