Friends,
Perhaps you remember the 1981 commercial in which a Rolls-Royce pulls up alongside another Rolls-Royce and a passenger in one asks, “Pardon me, would you have any Grey Poupon?” The other responds, “But of course!”, followed by the jar of Grey Poupon being passed between the vehicles. The commercial catered to an aspirational ethos that “one can enjoy the finer things of life with white wine mustard without paying high prices.”
It became the meme of the day and was parodied in many films and TV shows.
You might be asking, “Where is your mind going today, Michael?”
Well, this week, we continue with more parables in which Jesus begins with the mustard seed and then continues with yeast, treasure, pearls, and nets.
Continuing from last week’s wheat and weeds, Jesus uses these seemingly disconnected symbols to disrupt our ideas of power and status. The kin’dom isn’t a polished Rolls-Royce; it’s radical, hidden, and world changing.
