Perhaps you’re familiar with the phrase: “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Perhaps it’s true for weeds and plants. If you search for “when are plants weeds”, you might get a long response with a key summation: “A plant becomes a weed when it is unwanted in its location, harmful, or invasive. In legal terms, ‘weed’ can mean any plant causing harm, but ‘noxious weed’ is a formal designation for invasive, non-native species requiring control under state or local law.”
Years ago, when my garden was overwhelmed by weeds (it still is), I hired a young person to do my weeding, not thinking to point out areas of desired plantings or new shoots. Needless to say, they did an excellent job. Several of my beds were completely barren. Oh well, a fresh start.
This week we continue Jesus’s parables with the story of wheat and weeds from Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43. Unfortunately, with the traditional interpretation, it is used to separate and dismiss people. As with last week’s “Parable of the Sower,” I will be reflecting upon this through a relational integrated lens (Process Theology/Panentheism).
